Holding the Conference on “The Persian Gulf:
The Potentials and Challenges Ahead”
By the Iranology Foundation

The third International Conference on the theme of “The Persian Gulf: The Potentials and Challenges Ahead” was inaugurated on the National Day of the Persian Gulf with a speech by Professor Ayatullah Mohammed Khamenei, President of the Iranology Foundation. This Conference was held with the purpose of presenting some scientific and legal achievements and documents regarding the legitimacy of the use of the name “the Persian Gulf” for this region on 28 April 2016 on Qeshm Island. A number of prominent authorities in this field from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, and Lebanon presented their papers on some historical, cultural, legal, and political topics in relation to the Conference theme.

Professor Ayatullah Khamenei, while addressing the necessity of knowing the place of the Persian Gulf, stated:

Unfortunately, we do not know much about our rights in this regard, and rarely has ever anything been written or stated in relation to this issue. The legal status of the Persian Gulf within the framework of international laws is accepted in the world, and it must be considered as a closed gulf which belongs to Iran. History testifies to the fact that it has been called the Persian Gulf and has been a part of this country since 2500 years ago, and that its name has not been chosen by a specific nation or ruler. Therefore, we must defend our true right to the Persian Gulf more than ever before. In fact, if we act correctly, no one will ever permit themselves to use a fake name for this waterway.

The President of the Iranology Foundation, by emphasizing that the Persian Gulf is not an international waterway for the arrival and departure of ships and is, rather, a closed gulf, said that when we talk about the Persian Gulf, we are indeed speaking about our true right and a part of our flesh and blood and our country. The reason is that this region of our motherland has played an important role in serving the Iranian nation and the world before and after the rise of Islam. While emphasizing Iran’s significant role in creating a glorious civilization and spreading it in the world both before and after Islam, he maintained:

The Persian Gulf is not a piece of land or water; rather, it is deeply rooted in the history and geography of Iran and has always been the origin of blissing and heavenly gifts. Therefore, we must benefit from its unique and vast potentials, which have served humanity at all times in the best way possible.

After referring to the status of Iran and the Persian Gulf and the efforts of some of the ignorant rulers of the region for promoting insecurity there, Professor Ayatullah Khamenei continued as follows:

Iran is not after creating any conflicts over the Persian Gulf among the countries in the region. However, some of the rulers there have ignorantly begun some useless efforts in order to change its name. Our country has always advocated peace and security in this closed gulf.

After Professor Ayatullah Khamenei, General Ali Fadavi, Navy Commander of the Army of the Guardians of Islamic Revolution delivered his speech. By referring to the present opportunities in the Persian Gulf region, he stated that, undoubtedly, the main opportunity in the area is to follow the Islamic Revolution in Iran. This Revolution enjoys such a great power in the light of Islam that it can guarantee the establishment of security in all the countries in the region. The enemies of the Islamic Revolution are certainly against Iran’s becoming a powerful country and wish to spread insecurity in the Persian Gulf. Previously, several countries led by America made great attempts to turn it into an insecure area; however, all of them were finally doomed to failure, and today we can witness the presence of absolute security there. Commander Fadavi also maintained that the most important challenge in the Persian Gulf region is the presence of the United States of America, and if its tyrannical rulers did not seek to provoke unrest in this region, many of the existing problems would never have been created there in the first place.

The conference continued by the following speeches: “The Why of Research on the Persian Gulf Region” by Dr. Bahramzadeh ; “The Persian Gulf in the View of UNESCO” by Dr. Nasiri Ghidari; “The Persian Gulf: the Potentials and Challenges Ahead” by Dr. Mulla Salehi; “The Persian Gulf and the First Human Distributions” by Dr. Vahdatinasab; “Geopolitics in the Persian Gulf” by Dr. Jahanian; “America’s Motive in the Persian Gulf” by Dr. Ahmad ‘Isa al-Daqaq; “Originality of the Name of the Persian Gulf in Various Historical Periods and the Related Challenges” by Dr. N’eman, and “Methodology of the Studies on the Potentials and Challenges in the Persian Gulf with an Emphasis on Securing the Rights of Iranian People” by Dr. Zia’ifar.

At the end of the speeches and after appreciating the presenters’ valuable contributions to the Conference, two books were unveiled: The Travelogue of Captain Abbas Daryanavard and Iranians’ Naval Legacy by “Abdolkarim Mashayekhi and Tazkarat al-muttaqin by Nadereh Jalali. Finally, the closing Statement of the Conference was read to all the participants.
